Green Canyon boat trip from Side: what it actually is, and who it suits

Green Canyon is not a canyon you walk into and it is not a river you raft. It is a reservoir — the Manavgat river backed up behind the Oymapınar dam, filling a limestone gorge about 14 km long with deep, still, startlingly green water. The day out is a boat trip: slow, scenic, and almost entirely passive.

That last word decides whether you will love it or be bored by it, so it is worth being blunt about before you book.

The mix-up worth avoiding

Almost every week someone tells us they booked the wrong canyon. The names sound similar and hotel reps do not always slow down to explain the difference.

If you want adrenaline, stop reading and look at Köprülü Canyon rafting instead. If you want a long, easy day on water with a swim and a lunch, keep going.

What the day actually involves

Pickup from Side, Kumköy, Çolaklı, Sorgun or Titreyengöl is usually mid-morning. The road runs inland past Manavgat and climbs to the dam, which is worth the window seat — the reservoir appears suddenly below the road, an implausible jade colour against bare rock.

Boats are double-deck catamarans: shaded seating below, open sun deck above. Once you are out on the water the pattern is the same on every operator’s trip:

• Cruising the gorge. Roughly an hour of slow going between cliff walls, with the engine cut now and then so it is genuinely quiet.
• Swim stops. Usually two, from a platform at the back of the boat.
• Lunch on board. Included on the standard trips, served buffet-style.
• A fishing stop on some itineraries, which is more novelty than sport.

Boat-only trips run about five hours door to door. The versions that add a jeep leg or a cabrio-bus loop run seven to eight.

The cold water is not a rumour

This surprises people every single season. The reservoir is deep and fed by mountain water, and it does not warm up the way the Mediterranean does. In August, when the sea off Side is bath-warm, the swim stop at Green Canyon is genuinely cold — the kind that empties your lungs for a second.

It is refreshing rather than unpleasant, and most people are glad they got in. But if you are travelling with someone who only swims in warm water, tell them now rather than letting them find out from the platform.

Who this trip is for

Book it if you are travelling with grandparents, small children or a group that cannot agree on anything; if you want a day out that involves no walking; if you have had enough of the beach and want to see the inland landscape; or if you simply want to sit still somewhere beautiful for a few hours.

Skip it if you are after adrenaline, if long stretches of sitting make you restless, or if a scenic boat ride sounds like something you have already done in a dozen other countries. It is a lovely day, not a thrilling one.

Which version to book

There are three sensible shapes for the day, and the right one depends on how much of the day you want to give up:

• Boat only — the shortest and cheapest. Best if you want a half day and a swim, or if you are travelling with someone whose stamina is limited.
• Jeep plus boat — adds an off-road leg through the hills and usually the waterfall. Longer, dustier, more varied, and the most popular of the three by a wide margin. On our version lunch is at Gölbaşı Restaurant on Green Lake and the boat leg runs on an electric catamaran — no engine note in the gorge and no exhaust over the sun deck.
• Boat plus cabrio bus — the same water, with an open-top road loop instead of the off-road section. Gentler than the jeep, longer than the boat alone.

What to bring

A towel and swimwear, since the swim stop is the point. Sun cream, because the upper deck has no shade and the light comes off the water twice. Something with sleeves for the shaded lower deck, which is cooler than you expect once you are wet. Cash for drinks beyond what is included. And do not bother with hiking shoes — you will not walk anywhere.
